Keepin' on Truckin'

I was just talking to Ed and saying that I didn't feel like the editing process was actually offering me the opportunity to rediscover the film because it's pretty much fitting together the way I hoped it would. I can't believe I said something so silly.

First off, I'm amazed that it's fitting together the way I thought it would. So, I'm pretty excited every time a cut works like we're the first people to ever make two shots at different times in two different two places go back to back.

Second, it's not what I thought it would look like when I was writing. Not exactly, of course cause I didn't know who the cast was, what the design would be like. It's somewhat more what I thought it would look like when we were shooting but I wasn't on monitor the whole time so I saw the actors more than I saw the compositions. And I didn't know exactly where every cut would happen. And we are making one version of the infinite numbers of movies that we could make. Everything is a choice and the sooner I recognize that the better or I'm going to lose control of the meaning of the film.

Big choices like which song to use. (we just used a different song in scene 2 than i had anticipated and its so much better) Small choices like do we stay on Josh for a second longer or cut to Amanda. It's not just does it look right but what does it mean and I think I spent a couple of weeks just wanting to make sure that it looked good so we could move on and apply to festivals and show it to the world. And I've spent too much time on this to get impatient now.

We have a rough assembly of almost the whole film now and rough cuts of about 20% of the film.
