It's been a while since I posted and part of the reason is that I can't quite figure out how to write about editing. What I can say is that if you're ever going to direct a feature, sit in a room with someone who is editing one first. It will completely inform how your production runs. Pace is one thing. It is easy to get caught up in the go, go, now, now, move, move pace of production and editing requires the opposite. The slower the take (obviously within reason) the better. Lingering before and after the shot. It looks goofy when you're on set but it looks great on camera.
Sound recording. Don't even try and mimic on set what you want the film to play like. The more space there is (again within reason and only in most cases) the more latitude the editor has. Unless you're playing the whole film in one shots.
You really can't fix everything in post. You can cut around just about anything in post. But if anyone says, you can fix that in post, they're lying because it's something that doesn't matter to them and you should immediately start thinking more about whatever that thing is that they think you can fix in post.
I really liked being on set because I felt more comfortable staying close to the actors but I should have had someone on monitor who wasn't in the camera/lighting dept. Someone who I could have consulted about how things played and not just how things looked. Someday I assume I'll be better at this. I can look at a take on the monitor and then when I go to set, I'll be able to translate what it will look like on screen better.
Or we'll have a more comfortable video set up where I can really hunker in with my headphones and the screen instead of fighting for position with all the other dept. heads. Well, I don't know that I'll ever be comfortable with that. I liked the fly on the wall of the set view too much.
So, we're finished 45 out of 51 scenes. In other words, humming. And next time, I write I will be a babbo!
