The list of period references that I needed to explain at the first rehearsal made me think about publishing an annotated copy of the screenplay. But, in their defense, if at age 18, someone had asked me to be in a movie set in my birth year, how much would I have really known about the Carter-Ford campaign, about the Bay City Rollers, about S.W.A.T.
My favorite - because it puts American Idol into the context of fifty years' worth of game shows that have dredged up old celebrities - kids today don't know that Paula Abdul used to be a singer. The song "Opposites Attract" has not aged well. I couldn't be more pleased that I get to make a very reluctant 'Eddie' sing it in the film. Tonight's rehearsal is with the seniors who were mostly born in the Reagan years, so we'll see...
You can now add lawyerin' to the list of skills a Director must have. I hope it doesn't come up too often but I think I draw up a pretty mean contract.
Looking forward to a few days away from the film, far away from the film in Carbondale, IL for my brother-in-law's wedding. Congratulations Devin and Arielle and Mazel Tov.
