I went over the binder of research that Rebekah has compiled on sales agents and distributors and got short of breath. What we have to now while we edit and begin prepping for festival applications is try and get a sales agent or producer's rep on board to help us sell the film and capitalize on festival acceptances. It's boring stuff. Real boring stuff. But, hopefully, what they do means that I have to do less boring stuff on my own - like create our press packet.
We have two assistant editors working nights now on the film and Brandon and myself cleaning it up during the day and we are on schedule to have a cut by mid-October. So, three priorities now are festivals, sales agents and editing. Pretty much those "How to Make and Independent Film" books are right on about all the things that you're supposed to do and when. It's just way too much for Independent Filmmakers to actually do. There's no way to have enough time on your hands or to have the diverse expertise necessary to do all of these tasks. Unless, of course, you have all the time to learn how to be a lawyer, publicist, editor and so on.
