We colorized the film. Well, that's not entirely true but it did astonish me how sophisticated the color correction process is. How much you can change, pinpoint, paint over, bring up, crunch down. One more time that I feel like I went to hieroglyphics school, not film school. I'm pretty sure the words color correction were never even mentioned in two years of classes.
We did not have to Soderbergh our movie but there were some places where we could create bigger contrasts not only within the scenes but between the scenes. And the movie, in general, is much crisper and cleaner. So, it was really more like a fine tuning than an overhaul.
Liz flew in from NY for two days to oversee the process and I kind of, sickly, fell asleep in the back of the room and would wake up every once in a while and say something like "too magenta" because i'd heard someone else say it before. Needless to say, I felt somewhat out of my element cause I'd been looking at this kind of washed-out lime green film for six months and didn't even realize that there were any changes to be made.
I expect that the same will happen this weekend during the sound mix. I'm curious to see what the possibilities are.
Randy worked like a maniac the last week to get the score finished before we had to deliver our materials to the sound mixer and I can't imagine being happier. Especially since I gave him several last minute assignments.
Basically, after this long weekend, the film is finished. It's going to take me a while to understand what finished means, if there is such a thing as finished at all for that matter.
